Landscape Architecture Course Skills:
§ Advanced Planting Design and Planting Design: A clear design methodology was developed using
planting design as a focal point. This combined with Plant Identification gave
me a broader understanding of plant species and uses. In the latter stages of both
projects experience was gained in NBS Specifications (using NBS computer
software), Soft works details and Planting Plans (using AutoCAD 2D).
§ Hard and Soft Materials: An appreciation of materials and their
construction was developed through hand-drawn Hard Works Detail drawings. Soft
materials included Plant Identification (mentioned above) and Basic
Horticulture.
§ Theme Project: Quick sketch designs encouraged digital design skills by using AutoCAD
to draw plans and sections; using SketchUp to create 3D Models which, were
rendered using tools within SketchUp and Photoshop. Photoshop skills were also
developed by creating photomontages using a mixture of existing photos, stock
photos and modelling elements. An additional element of the module was to
prepare and present a seminar on a sustainability issue.
§ Design with Nature: Hand rendering techniques were developed during
this module as well as an appreciation of ecology and sylviculture. An
understanding of how to undertake Phase 1 Habitat Surveys as well as knowledge
of regional and local Biodiversity Action Plans was acquired. An Ecology and
Conservation module ran alongside the project work where written communication
skills were developed in report writing.
§ Site Design: An extensive amount of site research was undertaken as a group project
over a large area of central London. Particular elements of research were
assigned to individuals then as a group the information was collated and
presented as a booklet. The design project which followed was an individual
project that encouraged masterplan and sectional elevation digital rendering
skills.

Mushroom Works Gallery and Artist Studios, Volunteer – April-June 2010
§
Worked as a part of a team of volunteers as a
Gallery/Artist’s Assistant dealing with web promotions and gallery management. Web
promotions utilised Social Networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, as
research and advertising tools. Other tasks included updating the business’
blog, including links to resident artist’s websites. Assisting in the
management of the gallery gave experience in administrative tasks such as
inventory, filing and data inputting.
